YEAR 10 of Atlanta’s favorite Team Relay, 10K & 20K Road Race presented by REI and runningnerds Run Social Atlanta & benefitting Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association!  

RELAY IS LIMITED TO 75 TEAMS! Get your squad together and run in the 20K Relay (4 Runner/Walker team each completing a 5K Leg).

You can also participate in the road race as a 10K or 20K Individual Runner/Walker!

A Potential New Coffee Shop Will Open in Castleberry Hill’s Art District

Black Coffee has filed permits to open in a recently-renovated commercial space near Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

A business currently listed as “Black Coffee ATL” seems to have landed a home at 131 Walker St., which is the site of recent renovations and five commercial spaces totaling 5,036 square feet near Mercedes-Benz Stadium. While not much is known about Black Coffee ATL at this time, a permit application this week was filed with the City of Atlanta to buildout the coffee shop. The listed owner has yet to make a statement with What Now Atlanta. The Weekend Guide: Black History, Food Tours, and Orchids in Atlanta

It’s time to look at this Southern capital with fresh eyes: Atlanta is stealthily emerging as one of the country’s great urban destinations, with tantalizing eats, creative cocktails, ample museums, and plenty of green space. Atlanta has always held a particular magic, and what really makes the city shine is its abundance of Black history and culture—here’s how to see the best of it in three days. 

Day 1

Atlanta wouldn’t be Atlanta without the wealth of contributions that African Americans have brought to the city. Set out early from Hotel Clermont, which opened three years ago in a 1924 apartment building turned motor lodge, and head toward Auburn Avenue (affectionately known as Sweet Auburn), where Martin Luther King Jr. spent his childhood. 

Walk a few short blocks to Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park to learn about the civil rights hero’s life and activism. Visit the 1895 house where he was born and Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he preached until his assassination in 1968. Pay your respects at the King Center, where both he and his wife, Coretta Scott King, were laid to rest. 

Take a break to indulge in a taste of the Caribbean at Mangos Caribbean Restaurant, where you can choose from dishes like jerk chicken, escoveitch red snapper, and shrimp curry. After lunch, cross the street to For Keeps Books, which specializes in rare editions by Black authors, and continue along to the APEX (African American Panoramic Experience) Museum. You’ll need to book a timed-entry ticket in advance to explore the collection, which includes an exhibit on Black women in STEM. 

End the day with dinner at one of the city’s renowned Black-owned restaurants, Paschal’s. The original location on West Hunter Street was founded in 1947 by two brothers, James and Robert Paschal, and later served as an integral gathering place during the civil rights movement. This new location, opened in 2002, remains a favorite spot for soul food classics like fried chicken and mac and cheese.

Day 2

Head over to the Castleberry Hill historic arts district and browse through Besharat Gallery, the Granite Room, and ZuCot Gallery, the largest Black-owned fine art gallery in the Southeast. From here, drive about four miles north to the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Piedmont Park to see America’s largest permanent orchid collection; the thousands of flowers are as boldly colorful and unique as the art you’ve been viewing on gallery walls all day.

With Reverb hotel open, Castleberry Hill developer turns focus to apartments

You can’t miss Reverb’s towering LED board facing Mercedes-Benz Stadium

In some form or another, a Hard Rock hotel has been planned for downtown Atlanta since President George W. Bush was in office.

The Great Recession squashed a Hard Rock hotel-condo concept once pitched for a site beside the Georgia Aquarium. More recently, a few blocks away in Castleberry Hill, construction delays have plagued the Reverb by Hard Rock, which was initially expected to open in early 2018, allowing months to prepare for Atlanta’s 2019 Super Bowl.

Fits and starts aside, downtown officially got its Hard Rock on a couple of months ago. That’s when the music-themed lodge began accepting guests and flipped the switch on a huge LED lightboard that faces Mercedes-Benz Stadium, like two glowing neighbors in the night.

The 195-room, Gensler-designed Reverb, scaled back from initial plans, is the first example of a new boutique collection in the works by Hard Rock International. Read more here.

Brooklyn Tea expand: Castleberry Hill shop set to open this spring

The tea shop will feature 50 varieties (with more to come), plus lattes and vegan pastries.

Growing up, everyone in A.D. Wright’s West Indian household had a job to do; his was serving tea to his mother. In that regard, his life’s work was established at age 3. After growing up and working as a digital marketer, Wright found himself missing tea. He secured a job at a Manhattan tea shop and learning the business side while simultaneously studying to be a tea sommelier.

In 2017, he used his digital prowess to launch an online tea store with significant other Jamila McGill. A year later, the pair opened a brick-and-mortar shop near called Brooklyn Tea near their home in New York. Now, in May, their long-time friend Kerri-Ann Thomas is bringing Brooklyn Tea to Castleberry Hill in Atlanta.

“I’m from Atlanta. Kerri-Ann and I found each other at Spelman College. [Castleberry Hill] is our stomping grounds,” McGill says.
