Castleberry Hill Second Friday Art Stroll

Castleberry Hill comes alive on the second Friday of each month during the Art Stroll, one of Atlanta’s longest-running and most vibrant neighborhood art events.

Explore a rotating lineup of gallery exhibitions, open studios, pop-up installations, and creative spaces tucked throughout our historic arts district. Featured stops include Nina Baldwin Gallery, Old Rabbit Gallery, Besharat Gallery, Peters Street Station, Bookstore Gallery, and Atlantucky—along with many other locally loved venues and artists.

From fine art to street murals, live music to curated cocktails, the Art Stroll offers something for every kind of art lover. Many locations featured on the annual Loft Tour & Wine Tasting  also participate in the monthly stroll, so it’s a great way to stay connected to the Castleberry creative scene year-round.

The Art Stroll is free, self-guided, and open to all. Start your evening at any participating location and follow the vibe from there.

Visionary Miya Bailey Transforming Castleberry Hill Art Community

Miya Bailey, renowned artist and entrepreneur, has been a key figure in bringing tattoo artistry into mainstream culture while cultivating a thriving art community in Castleberry Hill. Alongside his business partner and art curator, Plushette Ellis, they have transformed the neighborhood into a vibrant hub for creative expression.

Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, Miya Bailey moved to Atlanta in 1994 to escape the streets to pursue an art career. Bailey began his tattoo journey in the early ‘90s after reading a book by Don Hardy on tattooing and tattoo culture. Upon noticing there was no African tattoo culture included in the book alongside the Japanese and New Zealand tattoo culture, Bailey started doing research on African art and warrior culture.  As Bailey says, “That’s how I got into tattooing.” For the culture. The rest is history. 

City of Ink Tattoo Studio, well known for their skill in tattooing melanin-rich skin tones in vivid colors. City of Ink has gone on to become round zero for Atlanta creatives, and a favorite of celebrities. City of Ink‘s annual anniversary celebrations are legendary, with attendees by the thousands, many flying in from around the country. 

333 Peters Street Station is a community center, a culture house, art gallery, studio and event space featuring popular art-centered activities and events each week.  The recently opened fine arts gallery Old Rabbit Art Gallery is presenting #MYMY333, a solo exhibition and new works by Miya Bailey on Friday September 6, 2024. Old Rabbit Gallery’s goal is to reinvigorate the local art community and provide a platform for contemporary artists. 

Plushette Ellis, Bailey’s business partner and gallery curator remarks, “Being able to curate art in all these beautiful galleries that Miya Bailey has created has been very rewarding. He trusts and believes in my vision, and the community I love does as well. Ellis shares a goal with Bailey, which is to see art in all Black family homes.

Besharat Gallery Museum is excited to announce an expansion of its current activities to include exhibitions by innovative Atlanta artists. The gallery is best known for its beautiful space and Massoud Besharat’s extensive private art collection; however, on Feb 9th, during the Castleberry Hill Art Stroll, the exhibition ‘Pivot’ by Ron Saunders will be featured. Pivot represents both Ron Saunders’ future endeavors and current art practice.  Ron presents a set of new abstract paintings that expose the tension between traditional organization and uncontrolled natural forces resulting in imagery that could be coined “cataclysmic formalism”. Through this lens, the paintings are unstable- background and foreground battle each other for dominance while giving rise to myriad emerging forms and clarifications. Through embracing the space between control and disorder, the striking unexpected visuals toy between beauty and inevitability.  

Along with this set of newer paintings, Ron continues his frozen pigment painting practice, which was first introduced in 2000. These works stand in opposition to the other paintings, in that they are created almost void of human intervention. These works, which are truly up to chance, are initiated by freezing water-borne paint and allowing it to melt and reconstitute over several days. Although the final imagery is aesthetically beautiful, the paintings can be seen as raw documentation of numerous state changes and natural forces that have their own dynamic.

The 2nd Friday of every month, the Castleberry Hill Art Stroll is held throughout the neighborhood. It is a self-guided tour and is completely FREE of charge!
