  • Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association
    General Business Meeting
    July 19, 2010, 6:30pm
The Granite Room – 211 Peters St.
    MINUTES

President, Laurel Emery, called the meeting to order at 6:36pm.

    SPECIAL GUESTS

Joan Garner – running for Fulton Co. Commissioner District 6

    • Reviewed the boundaries of the district.
    • She has lived in Old Fourth Ward since 1996; works with a non-profit on social change, and was NPU M chair.  Her focus is in communities and understands what Fulton Co. government provides.
    • Concerned about Grady, opportunities for youth, transportation, the Beltline, the library system and the arts.
    • Question from resident:  How to bridge the divide between the commissioners in North Fulton and in the South?  A:  We need one Fulton County which is strong; we can not afford to create new government.
    • Question from resident:  Would you consider studying consolidation between the county and the city?  A:  Where there is duplication of efforts or services certainly would look at any studies for that.
    • Question from resident:  What types of programs for youth in trouble?  A:  Though the county doesn’t fund any education for young people, we could look at what the mayor is suggesting, the centers of hope, but also look at our existing non-profits.

    Lt. Padgett

    • We have a picture of the person who broke into Burke Law Firm.
    • There have been 697 panhandling arrests in zone 5 year-to-date.  Several of those have been arrested multiple times for panhandling.
    • Crime is down 21% in zone 5.  Crime in this beat is now down since March.
    • If you call the police and no one shows up, we need to let Lt. Padgett know so he can research what happened.
    • Resident:  Do you have pandhandling arrests by beat?  A:  Not sure if we have it at that level.
    • Revised gun laws:  you can pick up your child at school with a visible gun and it is not illegal.  Police can not ask if you have a permit anymore.  Unless you have it posted in your business, people can have a gun and a drink in your restaurant.
    • Resident:  are bars and restaurants tending to put signs up?  A:  His officers can’t work off duty in a place that doesn’t have a sign up because he doesn’t want them in a gun fight with an intoxicated person.

    OFFICERS’ REPORTS

President:  Last Friday the US Secretary of Transportation was at the Mitchell Street bridge because it is one of the stimulus projects.
